Tullamore D.E.W. 14 Years Old Single Malt (41.3%, OB, 2016)

tullamore-d-e-w-14-year-old-single-malt-whisky

What they say

A 14 year old, triple distilled Irish single malt whiskey from the Tullamore DEW range, which has been finished in bourbon, Port, Madeira and Oloroso Sherry casks

Official tasting notes:

  • Nose: Zesty citrus, grilled pineapple and slowly building bourbon-y vanilla.
  • Palate: Big, creamy malt with loads of vanilla tannins. Ripe, sweet red grapes and a hint of poached apple.
  • Finish: Sherried sweetness carries on.

What I say

Sampled during the #TullamoreDEW tweet tasting hosted by Tullamore D.E.W. and @TheWhiskyWire on 2nd March 2016.

My tasting notes:

  • Appearance: Amber with bronze and copper (11/20)
  • Nose: Complex and musty, dunnage warehouse, deep and dark, then fruity and tropical, huge blast of vanilla on re-nosing – this needs to breathe a little
  • Taste: Rich sherried buttercream, strawberry jam and clotted cream on raisin scones, crème brulee, oh yes indeed!
  • Finish: Long, bitter oak wood with a little pepper, treacle toffee and dried fruits with a splash of cream

Overall

My favourite dram of the tasting, this is really quite special and an education to my Irish whiskey palate. This has all the subtleties of scotch single malt and has been married masterfully using the best qualities of each of the cask maturations involved.

Score 86/100

I’d have to agree with you on this one.
The 14yo Single Malt is one of the best Tullamore DEW I’ve had so far.
There are still a few out there I haven’t had yet – so I may yet have to revise that statement!

I was concerned on the number of cask maturations used but this whisky is an absolute masterpiece of the blenders art!
