What they say:
This unique Auchentoshan Lowland Single Malt Whisky has been matured in three different cask types. Moving from American Bourbon to Spanish Oloroso Sherry – and finally Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks – Three Wood is a rich, complex whisky with incredible toffee and sherry oak flavours.
Tasting Notes
To The Eye
Rich golden bronze.
To The Nose
Blackcurrant, brown sugar, orange, plum and raisin.
To The Tongue
Fruit and syrup. Hazelnut with hints of cinnamon and lemon. A butterscotch sweetness adds to the overall complexity.
To The End
Fresh and fruity, with long lasting oaky sweetness.
What I say:
Sampled as part of the #TheDramTeam launch twitter tasting.
Colour:
Old Madeira (13/20) oily droplet tears resolve to medium-fine legs
Nose:
Spiced ginger and orange marmalade, rich highland toffee, fruit cake, dried fruits; raisin, cherry, plum duff,
Taste:
Spiced and sherry soaked dried fruits; raisin, prune, cherry, light barley malt, spiced cinnamon and nutmeg, dark rum, zesty lime and lemon spritz, caramel, toffee and butterscotch
Finish:
Medium-long, spiced rum-soaked fruits in toffee
Overall:
Quite a mixture, just a little light in the body which gives a starkness to all those spices. Plenty going on but maybe perhaps a little too much and somewhat masks some of the nicer distillate characteristics. Very enjoyable all the same.
Score: 83/100
