Le Clos d’Orval 12 Ans
What they say
12 year old Calvados from Le Clos d’Orval – rich and complex with fragrant, vibrant apple freshness combined with classic oak-y spices. An excellent aperitif, and could also make for an interesting alternative to your after-dinner dram of whisky.
What I say
Very impressed with their 25 Year old but perhaps that was not the best indicator of their output, so I have returned to le Clos d’Orval Calovados with their 12 year old expression.

My tasting notes:
- Appearance Bronze (13/20) medium-fine tears and fine legs.
- Nose Apple pie and cinnamon, tannic French oak wood, robust, nutmeg, herbal, yeasty and beery, pear, caramel, toasted oak, waxed red apples, warm baking spices.
- Taste Medium-bodied, soft, buttery, apple pie with shortcrust pastry, cinnamon, toffee apple, custard, woody oak, gentle wood smoke, soft ginger, creme caramel and treacle toffee.
- Finish Long, soft, sweet and drying with gentle baking spices.
- Overall Wood overboard but still some soft baked apple fruit and toffee/caramel notes too. Another fine example of fruit and oak balance from le Clos d’Orval.
Score 87/100
