What they say

Selected by Jonathan V. Egan, a member of the sixth generation of the Egan family, this single grain Irish whiskey was allowed to mature in American oak bourbon barrels for a minimum of eight years. Jam packed with fruit and spice, this one.

Tasting notes by Master of Malt

Nose: Vanilla fudge and caramel notes. Subtle oak and grassy notes.

Palate: Smooth and creamy vanilla, with a subtle hint of cinnamon.

Finish: Long, gentle and light oak spiciness.

What I say

Celebrating the release of Egan’s Irish Whiskey Legacy Reserve Vol II with a tour through 4 of their expressions. Starting with this Vintage Grain, a single grain irish Whiskey matured for a minimum of 8 years in ex-American oak bourbon barrels.

This post was sponsored by Egan’s Irish Whiskey by provision of a sample of this product.

My tasting notes:

  • Appearance: White wine gold (6/20), numerous, medium tears and long, fine legs.
  • Nose: Sweet, clean and a little cloying, some acetone/alcohol solvent or feints, plenty of thick vanilla/Madagascan vanilla pods, some fruity apples and pears, a little toasted coconut and oak wood.
  • Taste: Light-medium bodied, oily, quite subtle and light in flavours, sweet fruity spirity notes, candy corn, rosey apples, pear drops, foam bananas, vanilla cream, honey, golden syrup, some soft white oak, warms with a hint of spiced cinnamon.
  • Finish: Long, sweet honey and apple puree.

Overall

Very pleasant, soft and light just as you’d expect from a Grain whiskey, a little hint of that spirity nature also give away the nature of the base spirit here. This has been well matured in ex-Bourbon and strikes a good balance making the end result very drinkable.

Score 83/100
