Tasting advice by our cellar master.
An exceptional Calvados for grand occasions
What I say:
A blend made from casks matured for a minimum of 30 years produced by Domaine du Coquerel. Bottled under their Marquis de la Pomme label, this expression is bottled at 42% ABV.
Appearance:
Dark amber bronze with reflective copper highlights (14/20), slow medium-fine tears and legs
Nose:
Softened apple fruits, apples stewed in brown or Demerara sugar, creamy coffee, latte and cocoa, toffee, caramel, a hint of oak wood, gentle wood spices like nutmeg, honey-sweetened but tannic/well stewed black tea, bursts of fresh apple and apple blossom.
Taste:
Much softer on the palate than the 2o year old expression, this has soft stewed apple, a hint of raisin, fresh red grapes, plum and damson, a rich caramel sauce, rum & raisin fudge, apple pastries or caramel apple granny, touches of milk chocolate and hazelnut complete the palate.
Finish:
Medium-long, sweet apple fruits with honey and caramel with oak wood persisting
Overall:
A beautifully pleasing expression, much more subtle than the 20 year old. Redolent with caramelised apples, giving it an almost a dessert-like quality. The woody influence was well integrated and sugary. Delicious!
Score: 89/100
