Bar Review: Ardshiel Hotel Restaurant and Whisky Bar (Campbeltown)
What I say:
An absolute must-visit for anyone spending any time visiting Campbeltown! The Ardshiel Hotel is the Whisky Bar to dram in during your stay. If anything finding time not dramming at Springbank or at Cadenhead’s shop or warehouse tours may be your problem. I can fully recommend not only the dram selection but also the food at the Ardshiel Hotel – so why not combine your lunch or dinner time with a few choice whisky supplements.
During our time in Campbeltown we stopped by for Lunch on what happened to be a reasonably quiet weekday so practically had the place to ourselves. The staff were very friendly, helpful and accommodating and food served promptly and was delicious. This gave me plenty of time to peruse the whisky menu, the back bar shelves and the display cabinets all around the bar/restaurant area – all stocked with a fabulous collection of whisky from the essentials to some real old & rare expressions. The pricing was fair, having an understanding of the rarity and availability of some of the drams on offer.
I was lucky enough to sample one of the few remaining drams in a 2001-2011 Hazelburn Port matured whisky. Bottled for the Springbank Open Day. Port Hogshead cask distilled May 2001, bottled May 19, 2011. 70cl and bottled at 50%. One of only 306 bottles. Which my friend Neil Mackinnon remembers stocking in the hotel fondly when working there as a bartender.
The Ardshiel Hotel is also the perfect base location for any tour of Campbeltown’s rich whisky history, including Cadenhead’s whisky shop, Springbank and Glengyle distilleries and the Glen Scotia distillery are all within short walks of this centrally located hotel.
What they say:
Our aim is to provide a relaxed and friendly atmosphere whether you are staying with us overnight, visiting our restaurant, catching up with friends over coffee or enjoying a drink in our award winning bar.
The Ardshiel Hotel provides an excellent base to explore Campbeltown and Kintyre. Situated within walking distance of the town centre and all three of the towns working distilleries Springbank, Glengyle and Glen Scotia enjoying Campbeltown’s rich whisky history is right on your doorstep.
The famous Machrihanish Golf Course is only a short drive away and our guests enjoy discounted green fees. Kintyre has a further five courses which are also within easy reach.
The hotel was built in 1877 and was designed by John Burnet Senior, a prominent architect of the time and was once the home of one of the towns distilling families. The hotel has undergone renovation and improvements over the last four years highlighting some of the original features.
With an ever changing and growing whisky list the bar at the Ardshiel offers the whisky enthusiast or the novice a real treat. With over 700 malts to choose from many which are rare and exclusive it attracts visitors from far and wide. The Hotel won the Wee Dram Whisky Bar of the Year 2010 and the prestigious Scottish Field Whisky Bar of the Year in 2013 and 2014.
We also offer real ales, craft beers, wines and a growing selection of gins.
