What they say

A single Bourbon cask sample from the 2009 parcel used in the construction of Warehouse 2 Batch No.002 reduced to 48.5% ABV for comparison.

What I say

The second instalment of Fettercairn’s Warehouse special edition series also hails from Warehouse No.2. This time Greg explained they discovered a parcel of Fettercairn maturing in ex-Rye casks, distilled in 2009 making these around 12 years old. To balance the spiciness of the Rye a similar parcel from 2009 matured in ex-Bourbon casks were used to add lightness and sweetness and temper the spice, after playing around with the marriage ratios a final balance of 38% Rye cask to 62 % Bourbon cask -matured spirit was used to produce the final expression. This cask sample was drawn from one of the 2009 Bourbon casks and diluted to 48.%% ABV to match the final expression

My tasting notes

  • Appearance Champagne gold (5/20), medium-fine tears and long, fine legs.
  • Nose Sweet vanilla, custard, creamy, fruit, apple slices and dried apple rings, malted milk biscuits, pineapple, mango, floral, honey, grassy.
  • Taste Green fruits and vanilla, melon, green apples, medlar and quince, touch spirity, medium-light bodied, vanilla Danish pastries, mini apple tarts/pies sugared and with healthy shortcrust pastry to fruit ratio.
  • Finish Medium-long, drying, soft spices, sugary more fruit and shortcrust pastry.
  • Overall Soft fruity and vanillic, actually really good, I think I like this single cask more than the standard Fettercairn 12 Years Old – I suspect Greg picked out one of the best of the bunch?

Score 84/100
