New Whisky Releases: Week 4 2018
New releases are picking up and we are spoilt for choice this week, with several making the list then being bumped off again for reasons of price (too expensive for the numbers on the bottle), production (single casks vs small batch for example) and alternatives (several Indie Blair Athol releases but none made the list)
I’m not a huge Bowmore fan but I do appreciate some of the well aged stuff, the OB 18 year old for example. This 21 year old 1996 vintage single cask presented at 53.3 % ABV by Hunter Laing’s has fascinating tasting notes (seaweed, candlewax and white chocolate) and retails for around 1/10th of an equivalent official bottling.
Bunnahabhain Mòine £61.63
Peated Bunnahabhain, or Margadale to those of us used to drinking the Independently bottled options available up until now – officialy it’s Mòine.
Bushmills matured in Sherry casks – first fill Oloroso butts no less.
Caol Ila DE see our review of the 2001 (Bottled 2013) here
More first fill Sherry butt – a Glenlivet no less, 10 years old UCF at 46% – bargain!
Old single cask Inchmurrin from Loch Lomond distillery, single malt and slightly peaty – and mostly delicious.
Jura Destiny £39.95
Peaty, sherried fruits and spice combine in this Destiny expression from Jura – definitely on my to buy list.
Small batch (2 casks) but still a grand old Linkwood with some wonderful tropical fruits and that characteristic sweetness.
Pricey – Too pricey in fact but then Japanese whisky is only for Footballers and other Millionaires with more money than sense, taste? Included as it isn’t often you see them on these shores and Mars do seem to make some great (though young!) stuff. see our 2011 Komagatake and 2011 Zenkoji reviews for similar
Whaaat! another one and much cheaper too. This Shinanotanpopo (Dandelion flower) edition is linguistically challenging enough sober, think sweet, fruity and summery for this one – plus it’s cheaper too!
Bushmills *ahem* Irish Whiskey in an Oloroso sherry butt, we quite enjoyed this one and a great price too – see our review here
