Whisky New Releases 2017 Week 34

Welcome to The Whiskyphiles New Releases, our weekly report on the best of both the official and independently bottled whisky recently released.

Our top picks this week:

  1. Ardbeg An Oa The latest Ardbeg is the first addition to their core range for over 10 years so may well be worth seeking out for educational purposes. I suspect the reaction to this one may dictate how people feel directions are being taken at Ardbeg for the coming future.
  2. Ledaig 2000 (bottled 2015) – Connoisseurs Choice (Gordon & MacPhail) The new Ardbeg on the block, there are some younger Ledaig releases this week too. Young often works because younger = peatier/smokier as these characteristics in the spirit diminish with cask maturation. However, I have opted for G&M as a quality supplier and for the fact this is of similar price but twice as old as others available this week.
  3. Balvenie Peat Week Aged 14 Years – 2002 Vintage Not the first expression from Balvenie to be peaty, however previous releases have relied on using ex-Islay casks to add peat influence to their not-so peaty spirit. This time they have produced the genuine article using peated barley to make their spirit. Still no RRP on this one but I expect it to sell-out fast even with the expected hefty price-tag!

Full on peaty this week though some are a little unusual. Would have also suggested the Lg7 but our supplier has sold out already.

Sláinte!
