    Intersting to see this progress.

I know of at least one other whisky blog who gets as much if not more traffic than me – based on known quantities. Have you ever thought of using tools like SEM rush to look at search visibility? There are some high up the Alexa list that barley chart on organic search, indicating they get little in reality. (Purely asking as a stats geek!)

As mentioned before, Alexa is a good indication of American traffic, and other markets where mother company Amazon is present. Traffic from other markets will be highly underrated. Alexa tells me 36% of my visitors come from Germany – in reality this is 11%. On the other hand 10% of my visitors are Belgian, and these are not seen at all in Alexa.

SEM rush will give you other distortions because it only looks at search engine queries and the resulting traffic. Whiskyfun.com for instance is hardly optimized for search engines and would plummet in this ranking, but I think it’s safe to assume it deserves the high spot.

SEM Rush (fully paid version) gives an indicator of all traffic (paid, organic, and direct), but I do get your point. Perhaps layer things like Moz or search metrics would also get some domain authority indicators as well, which probably cuts through the crap a bit more. Clearly not an exact science.

    Thanks for the comments

I agree the usual caveats apply and results are only indicative. Regardless of its flaws Alexa is still the easiest metric to obtain en masse and work with for this kind of analysis for me, though I am always happy to explore other options so many thanks for the suggestions. Looking at the results there is usually some logic that supports such rankings i.e. in comparison to Google analytics when/where shared and knowledge of blogs popularity and traffic. It is also heartening to see in the global scale of the interweb that Whisky is still very popular in general!

the data seems highly biased towards US / UK domains , it sounds highly unreliable to me

Hi Gal, thanks for your comments, yes it shouldn’t be over-analysed or taken too seriously and I agree there is probably a US/UK bias to a degree, however some foreign language blogs fare very well though perhaps due to lack of competition in their respective home country/language?
