News: New Whisky Releases 2016 Week 12
This weeks new releases sees only a small (10) collection of bottlings on offer. Douglas Laing’s supreme Rock Oyster Island Blend which we love gets a boosted Cask Strength batch. Highland Park released their much-discussed Ice Edition, I have to admit checking it wasn’t April the 1st when I first saw this mountain shaped green bottle! The Irish Hibernia distillery release the 2nd President’s Cask which sees a rum-finish. More younger Langside offerings from Allt-à-Bhainne and Tamdhu offer great insight into the relatively unadultered spirit from these distilleries. A trio of single casks from Master of Malts own series, of which I would opt for the cheapest a 12 year old Caol Ila, rather than the more exclusively priced 25 year old Glenlossie or Macallan, though the colour on the Macallan is awfully tempting from that refill sherry maturation. The most enigmatic release this week is from Ricky Christie (previously connected to North of Scotland distillery) with this 12 year old mystery Speyside malt finished for 6 months in Prunelle (plum liqueur) casks and named The Wolf of Badenoch after Alexander Stewart, the Earl of Buchan. Finally from Signatory we have another rare single cask, cask strength Mosstowie 35 Year Old 1979 produced from the Lomond stills that ran at Miltonduff distillery for only 17 years. My drinkers this week are Rock Oyster and Caol Ila 12 and for those not short of pocket change the Macallan 25 Year Old 1990 and Glenlossie 25 Year Old 1990 are affordable rarities! Investment money with the Macallan 25 Year Old 1990 though selling at this price the resale potential is slim to none.
