News: New Whisky Releases 2016 Week 7
This week as usual we have a veritable feast of new whiskies to drool over! Dangerous for pocket money is Douglas Laing’s newly re-branded provenance range which not only look good but offer a wide variety of youthfull expressions from many distilleries – excellent for allowing you to sample the character of these distilleries without too much cask influence – and most of them are coming in at sub £40! My pick would have to be the Talisker 7 but the Benrinnes, Auchentoshan and Aberlour are equally as tempting – in fairness I could pick any and not be disappointed at these prices.
Carn Mor’s Longmorn (sorry Longmorn fan alert!) took my eye but I suspect the single cask 24yo Bowmore will make most waves. Similarly Hunter Laing’s Linkwood (or the Langside Linkwood) are both very affordable and bound to be good though the big (investment) money goes to Hunter Laing’s well aged Macallan and Springbank expressions, after Glenrothes 1969 single cask. Mackillop’s Scapa is expensive but will appeal to fans of this rarely bottled distillery and Signatory’s Imperial single cask 20yo 1995 and Mosstowie 35yo 1979 represent the wee tastes of history – snap these up before it is all gone. Mosstowie was only open 17 years between 1964 and 1981!
The Whiskyphiles pick for this week goes to: Imperial 20 Year Old 1995 (cask 50154) – Cask Strength Collection (Signatory) 20 year old, single cask, cask strength from a closed distillery for a fraction over £80. Currently Imperial doesn’t score big on the resale/auction market but if you are willing to store these a few years I suspect they will not lose value.
