What they say:

Cask No. 25.68

The panel found ripe pear, apple and lychee drizzled with light blossom honey at first. The Scots found chalky Edinburgh rock and the French, minty mineralic Pastilles de Vichy, then marshmallow and nutty flapjack, Fresh ginger on the nose catapulted into white pepper and chilli tang at full strengh before apple juice, bitter lemon and dry grass developed. Water opened green perfumed notes of agave, sliced pear and fresh laundry. Sweetness unfolded with dusty marshmallow, nougat, fudge, honey and love hearts on the nose. The spice was tempered but still tingled with orange blossom and tinned melon on the finish.

Distilled 14th November 1990, Aged 23 Years, Refill Hogshead, 214 bottle outturn at 57.8% ABV

What I say:

Sampled at SMWS Queen Street on Valentine’s Day 2015 just after it was released.

Colour:

Sauternes Gold (6/20) numerous fine tears

Nose:

Fruity apple, pear, peach, warm tarte tatin, orchard blossom honey, floral

Taste:

Fruity baked apples in cinnamon, custard Apple and vanilla custard, some cereal barley husks and dry grass, light dusty and chalky, Edinburgh Rock, Love Hearts sweeties and marshmallows, fruity and chalky like Pez sweeties.

Finish:

Medium length, sherbet and citric fizzy sweet with some caramel oak wood

Overall:

A rather light and beautifully gentle expression, this reminded us of old 10p mixes of sweeties in a paper bag. Always a pleasure to sample something from Rosebank and these SMWS single cask expressions still represent good value for money. Fentiman’s Rose Lemonade was a perfect accompaniment to this dram 😉
