Caol Ila 18 Years Old 1994 Private Collection Sassicaia Wood Finish (45%, Gordon & MacPhail, 1100 bottles, 2012)

Although this is one of the smoothest and most interesting Caol Ila expression I have had in a long time, there are still some elements of this distillate that I can’t seem to love no matter how hard I try. This is a very special combination of subtle smoke and huge fruity wine flavours and all credit to Gordon & MacPhail for a superb maturation and bottling. 86/100

Laphroaig 12 Year Old 1996 Bass (58.6%, Lockett Bros, Bourbon HH #7288, 276 bottles, 2009)

Laphroaig 12 Year Old Cask Strength The Bass Lockett Bros

Laphroaig’s no-nonsense intense peaty style actually lends itself rather well to cask strength whisky. I don’t know if the quoted 40ppm phenolics just subtly blend into what I think of as the stereotypical Laphroaig taste or if their distillation process and maturation removes the halogenated [chloro-phenol] most medicinal/TCP-esque nasal offenders? Either way this one seriously warms the cockles! 89/100
